About our service in Bristol

A local cremation, arranged with care.

If you’ve lost someone in Bristol or anywhere across the West, we can help you arrange a basic cremation — also called a direct or unattended cremation. The process happens locally: an independent funeral director near you brings your loved one into care at their own funeral home, and the cremation takes place at one of the established Bristol-area crematoria.

Bristol is well served. Canford Crematorium opened in 1937 and serves north and central Bristol. South Bristol Crematorium covers the south of the city. Westerleigh Crematorium serves South Gloucestershire and the eastern fringe, with Mangotsfield serving the suburban east. Weston-super-Mare Crematorium covers the North Somerset coastal stretch.

The price is £1,499 — a single all-inclusive figure covering everything that needs to happen. The team is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Registering a death in Bristol

Bristol Register Office

Address
Quakers Friars, Broadmead, Bristol BS1 3DF

All deaths that occurred within the City of Bristol must be registered at Bristol Register Office at Quakers Friars in Broadmead. The office is appointment-only; bookings open once the Medical Examiner or coroner has released the paperwork. A death must normally be registered within 5 days unless the coroner is involved. Bristol participates in Tell Us Once. South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath & North East Somerset each have their own register offices for deaths in those districts.

Hospital bereavement offices in Bristol & the West

If your loved one died in hospital, the hospital’s bereavement office handles the paperwork that needs to go to the Medical Examiner before the death can be registered. Your funeral director will normally liaise with them on your behalf.

  • Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI)

Bereavement Services, Marlborough Street, BS2 8HW. Call ahead before visiting.

  • Southmead Hospital

Bereavement Office, Southmead Road, BS10 5NB. Open weekdays.

  • Bristol Royal Hospital for Children

Specialist child bereavement support. Upper Maudlin Street, BS2 8BJ.

When the coroner is involved

If the death has been referred to the coroner

If the death is unexpected, sudden or the cause is not yet clear, the Medical Examiner may refer the case to HM Senior Coroner for Avon, which covers Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. This happens for around 40% of deaths in England and Wales.

The Bristol coroner reviews the cause of death and either releases the death for registration or arranges a post-mortem. Where a post-mortem is needed, your loved one is held at the Flax Bourton public mortuary.

If an inquest is opened, the coroner sends the paperwork to the registrar after it concludes. The cremation can proceed once the coroner releases your loved one to the funeral director.

Frequently asked questions

Bristol questions, answered

Which Bristol crematorium will be used?
Most often Canford (north Bristol), South Bristol (south), or Westerleigh / Mangotsfield (east and South Gloucestershire). Your local funeral director picks the appropriate facility based on availability and your area.
Do you cover Bath, Weston-super-Mare and South Gloucestershire from Bristol?
Yes — we work with funeral directors and crematoria across the West. Each district has its own register office, but the £1,499 price is the same.
How quickly can you collect from a Bristol hospital?
Once the BRI or Southmead bereavement office and Medical Examiner have released the paperwork, collection is typically within hours, day or night.
What if my loved one died at home in Bristol?
If expected, call the GP or out-of-hours GP service to verify death. Then call us. If unexpected, 999 first — paramedic and police attendance is routine, which triggers a coroner referral.
Can ashes be scattered on the Avon Gorge or at sea?
Sea scattering off the Bristol Channel is straightforward. Avon Gorge / Clifton Downs scattering is also common with appropriate care. We return the ashes to you and what you do with them is entirely your choice.
