About our service in Sheffield

A local cremation, arranged with care.

If you’ve lost someone in Sheffield or anywhere across South Yorkshire, we can help you arrange a basic cremation — also called a direct or unattended cremation. The process happens locally: an independent funeral director near you brings your loved one into care at their own funeral home, and the cremation takes place at one of the established Sheffield crematoria.

Sheffield is well served. The City Road Crematorium in the east opened in 1905 and is one of England’s oldest. Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium in the south, opened in 1958, sits on a wooded hillside south of the city. Together with Grenoside Cemetery and Crematorium in the north, they cover most of the city. The wider South Yorkshire region — Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley — has its own crematoria too.

The price is £1,499 — a single all-inclusive figure covering everything. The team is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Local crematoria

The crematoria we use across South Yorkshire

We work with City Road, Hutcliffe Wood and Grenoside — alongside crematoria across the wider South Yorkshire region. Your local funeral director arranges the cremation at the appropriate facility for your area; you’ll know the date and time in advance.

City Road Crematorium

City Road, Sheffield S2 1GD

Opened in 1905, City Road is one of the oldest crematoria in England. Operated by Sheffield City Council, set within the historic City Road Cemetery in the east of the city.

Hutcliffe Wood Crematorium

Hutcliffe Wood Road, Beauchief, Sheffield S8 0EX

Opened in 1958, Hutcliffe Wood sits on a wooded hillside in south Sheffield. Operated by Sheffield City Council, with two chapels and extensive Gardens of Remembrance.

Grenoside Cemetery and Crematorium

Skew Hill Lane, Grenoside, Sheffield S35 8RZ

North Sheffield’s crematorium, set on the city’s northern edge near the Peak District boundary. Operated by Sheffield City Council.

Rotherham Crematorium (East Herringthorpe)

East Herringthorpe Cemetery, Wickersley Road, Rotherham S65 3NN

Serves Rotherham and the eastern South Yorkshire fringe. Operated by Rotherham Council.

The exact crematorium used depends on the area of South Yorkshire you’re in, and on availability. The local funeral director arranges this directly and tells you the date and time in advance.

Registering a death in Sheffield

Sheffield Register Office

Address
Surrey Place, Sheffield S1 2LH

All deaths that occurred within the City of Sheffield must be registered at Sheffield Register Office in Surrey Place. The office is appointment-only and bookings open once the Medical Examiner or coroner has released the paperwork. A death must normally be registered within 5 days unless the coroner is involved. Sheffield participates in Tell Us Once. Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley each have their own register offices for deaths in those districts.

Hospital bereavement offices in South Yorkshire

If your loved one died in hospital, the hospital’s bereavement office handles the paperwork that needs to go to the Medical Examiner before the death can be registered. Your funeral director will normally liaise with them on your behalf.

  • Royal Hallamshire Hospital

Bereavement Office, Glossop Road, S10 2JF. Call ahead before visiting.

  • Northern General Hospital

Bereavement Services, Herries Road, S5 7AU. Open weekdays.

  • Weston Park Hospital

Bereavement support specialising in cancer-related deaths. Whitham Road, S10 2SJ.

When the coroner is involved

If the death has been referred to the coroner

If the death is unexpected, sudden or the cause is not yet clear, the Medical Examiner may refer the case to HM Senior Coroner for South Yorkshire (Western District), which covers Sheffield. This happens for around 40% of deaths in England and Wales — it’s routine.

The Sheffield coroner reviews the cause of death and either releases the death for registration or arranges a post-mortem. Where a post-mortem is needed, your loved one is held at the public mortuary until the examination is complete.

If an inquest is opened, the coroner sends the paperwork to the registrar after it concludes. The cremation can proceed once the coroner releases your loved one.

Frequently asked questions

Sheffield questions, answered

Which Sheffield crematorium will be used?
Most often City Road (east Sheffield), Hutcliffe Wood (south) or Grenoside (north). Your local funeral director picks the appropriate facility based on availability and your area.
Do you cover Rotherham, Doncaster and Barnsley from Sheffield?
Yes — we work with funeral directors and crematoria across South Yorkshire. Each district has its own register office and crematorium, but the £1,499 price is the same.
How quickly can you collect from a Sheffield hospital?
Once the Hallamshire or Northern General bereavement office and Medical Examiner have released the paperwork, collection is typically within hours, day or night.
What if my loved one died at home in Sheffield?
If expected, call the GP or out-of-hours GP service to verify death and start the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death. Then call us. If unexpected, 999 first — paramedic and police attendance is routine.
Can ashes be scattered in the Peak District?
Yes — many Sheffield families scatter on the Peak District moors or at meaningful sites. There’s no permit needed for ashes scattered by hand on private land or with landowner permission.
