About our service in Liverpool

A local cremation, arranged with care.

If you’ve lost someone in Liverpool or anywhere across Merseyside, we can help you arrange a basic cremation — also called a direct or unattended cremation. The whole process happens locally: an independent funeral director near you brings your loved one into care at their own funeral home, and the cremation takes place at one of the established Liverpool-area crematoria.

Liverpool is well served. Anfield Crematorium, opened in 1896, is one of the country’s oldest. Springwood Crematorium in south Liverpool, Allerton Cemetery and Crematorium, and West Derby Crematorium together cover the bulk of the city. The wider Merseyside conurbation — Wirral (Landican Crematorium), Sefton (Thornton Garden of Rest), St Helens, Knowsley — has its own facilities too.

The price is £1,499 — a single all-inclusive figure covering everything that needs to happen. The team is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

Local crematoria

The crematoria we use across Merseyside

We work with Anfield, Springwood, Allerton and West Derby — alongside crematoria across the wider Merseyside region. Your local funeral director arranges the cremation at the appropriate facility for your area; you’ll know the date and time in advance.

Anfield Crematorium

Priory Road, Anfield, Liverpool L4 2SL

Opened in 1896, Anfield is one of the oldest crematoria in the country. Operated by Liverpool City Council within the historic Anfield Cemetery, with two chapels.

Springwood Crematorium

Springwood Avenue, Allerton, Liverpool L25 7UN

Liverpool City Council’s south Liverpool crematorium. Modern facility serving Allerton, Woolton, Garston, Aigburth, Speke and the southern fringe.

Allerton Cemetery and Crematorium

Springwood Avenue, Allerton, Liverpool L19 4LY

Adjacent to Springwood, Allerton is the wider cemetery site. Together with Springwood it serves the south of the city.

West Derby Crematorium

Mill Lane, West Derby, Liverpool L12 7LN

Operated by Liverpool City Council, West Derby serves the east of the city — Norris Green, Tuebrook, West Derby, Croxteth and Knotty Ash.

Landican Cemetery and Crematorium

Arrowe Park Road, Birkenhead, Wirral CH49 5LW

Wirral’s principal crematorium, serving Birkenhead, Wallasey, Bebington, Heswall and the Wirral peninsula.

Thornton Garden of Rest

Lydiate Lane, Thornton, Liverpool L23 4UE

Sefton Council’s crematorium, serving Crosby, Formby, Bootle, Litherland and the north Merseyside coastline.

The exact crematorium used depends on the area of Merseyside you’re in, and on availability. The local funeral director arranges this directly and tells you the date and time in advance.

Registering a death in Liverpool

Liverpool Register Office

Address
St George's Hall, St George's Place, Liverpool L1 1JJ

All deaths that occurred within the City of Liverpool must be registered at Liverpool Register Office, located inside the historic St George's Hall. The office is appointment-only; bookings open once the Medical Examiner or coroner has released the paperwork. A death must normally be registered within 5 days unless the coroner is involved. Liverpool participates in the Tell Us Once service, which lets you notify most government departments at the registration appointment. Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley and St Helens each have their own register offices for deaths within those boroughs.

Hospital bereavement offices in Merseyside

If your loved one died in hospital, the hospital’s bereavement office handles the paperwork that needs to go to the Medical Examiner before the death can be registered. Your funeral director will normally liaise with them on your behalf.

  • Royal Liverpool University Hospital

Bereavement Office at the Royal Liverpool, Mount Vernon Street, L7 8XP. Call ahead before visiting.

  • Aintree University Hospital

Bereavement Services, Lower Lane, Fazakerley, L9 7AL. Open weekdays.

  • Liverpool Women's Hospital

Bereavement support specialised in pregnancy loss, neonatal and women's health bereavement. Crown Street, L8 7SS.

  • Alder Hey Children's Hospital

Specialist child bereavement support. Eaton Road, West Derby, L12 2AP.

When the coroner is involved

If the death has been referred to the coroner

If the death is unexpected, sudden or the cause is not yet clear, the Medical Examiner may refer the case to HM Senior Coroner for Liverpool & Wirral. This happens for around 40% of deaths in England and Wales — it’s routine and not an indication that anything is wrong.

The coroner reviews the cause of death and either releases the death for registration or arranges a post-mortem. Where a post-mortem is needed, your loved one is held at the Liverpool public mortuary until the examination is complete.

If an inquest is opened, the coroner sends the paperwork to the registrar after the inquest concludes — you don’t register yourself. The cremation can proceed once the coroner releases your loved one.

Help with funeral costs

If you’re worried about the cost

If you’re receiving certain benefits and arranging the funeral, you may qualify for the government’s Funeral Expenses Payment. This one-off payment can cover most of the cremation cost and a contribution towards funeral director fees.

Apply through gov.uk or call the Bereavement Service helpline on 0800 731 0469. Claims can be made up to six months after the funeral.

If you’re struggling to cover the £1,499 upfront, call us and we can talk through options.

We’re not financial advisors and can’t make benefit applications on your behalf, but the team is happy to talk you through what’s available before you commit to anything.

Frequently asked questions

Liverpool questions, answered

Which Liverpool crematorium will be used?
It depends on where you are in the city. North/east Liverpool tends towards Anfield or West Derby; south Liverpool to Springwood or Allerton; the Wirral side to Landican; Sefton/Crosby to Thornton. Your local funeral director picks the appropriate facility and tells you the date and time in advance.
Do you cover Wirral, Sefton, Knowsley and St Helens?
Yes. We work with funeral directors and crematoria right across Merseyside. Each borough has its own register office, but the cremation arrangement and £1,499 price is the same.
How quickly can you collect from a Liverpool hospital?
Once the bereavement office and Medical Examiner at the Royal, Aintree, Women's or Alder Hey have released the paperwork, collection is typically within hours, day or night.
What if my loved one died at home in Liverpool?
If expected, call the GP or out-of-hours GP service first to verify death and start the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death. Then call us. If unexpected, 999 first — paramedic and police attendance is routine, which triggers a coroner referral.
Can ashes be scattered at sea or on the Mersey?
Sea scattering off the Mersey or the Liverpool coastline is possible — there’s no permit needed for ashes scattered by hand. We return the ashes to you, and what you do with them is entirely your choice.
